Microsoft - Silverlight

April 16th, 2007 by Kamal Ahluwalia

Microsoft has just unveiled Silverlight.

“Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web.”

For product companies that rely on rich interactive applications in their tools/services this is a significent development and I am sure they are are going to closely follow the details being released by Microsoft over the next few weeks.

While this is a significant event, it is just a re-branding of WPF/E (Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere). It is significant because Microsoft has finally decided that WPF/E is ready for the limelight. It will be interesting to see how Silverlight compares against Adobe Flash especially given Flash’s remoting support and other advanced capabilities that Silverlight currently perhaps doesn’t have but I think we will be seeing in the future. These features while un-important in the immediate future for media-oriented applications like video streaming and simple animations - will prove to be deciding factor in the long run when it comes to adoption for development of complex RIAs.

Hi, I came across this article while looking for help with fixing Microsoft Silverlight. I’ve recently switched browsers from Opera to IE. Now I seem to have a issue with loading websites that have Microsoft Silverlight. Every time I browse page that needs Microsoft Silverlight, the page crashes and I get a “npctrl.dll” error. I cannot seem to find out how to fix the problem. Any aid getting Microsoft Silverlight to function is very appreciated! Thanks
