Process Improvement with CMMI   Print E-mail

The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) framework is one of the most proven and respected process improvement approaches in the software industry today. Software development organizations pursue CMMI in order to institutionalize "effective, repeatable, and lasting" processes that have a measurable impact on the quality and cost of their software products.

Despite its popularity, proper adoption of CMMI requires a significant commitment of capital and resources from the organization. Without a efficient process architecture, the structured and disciplined management of the roles, activities, and work products that collectively make up the organization's processes will be difficult and costly to achieve.  The challenge grows exponentially as the organization aims to deploy standard processes that span the entire organization, as required by the higher maturity levels of the framework. A comprehensive process solution that can aid inthe definition and ongoing modification of development processes on the one hand, and assist the execution and monitoring of these processes on the other, will increase the ROI of CMMI dramatically.

Osellus' enterprise-class process solutions are designed specifically to meet the challenging requirements of the Software Engineering Discipline in CMMI (CMMI-SW). CMMI organizations at all maturity levels use IRIS Process Author to model Process Management, Project Management, Engineering and Support CMMI process areas.  Support for CMMI includes:

  • Pre-packaged definitions of CMMI-SW process areas
  • Pre-defined CMMI compliance and deviation reports

IRIS Process Author is based on the industry standard Sofware Process Engineering Metamodel (SPEM) from OMG. Furthermore, all major industry software development methodologies can be modeled, including IBM's Rational Unified Process, Fujitsu's Macroscope, and Microsoft's Microsoft Solutions Framework as well as proven internal practices. All procedures, guidance, tools and methods embodied in an organization's choice of methodology can be captured in their entirety.

Level 2 - Manage Your Projects in Accordance with a Pre-defined Process

CMMI Level 2 organizations use the IRIS Process Author visual modeling environment to create project-ready processes in SPEM.

Osellus' IRIS Process Live provides a complete solution for enacting a prescribed process model.  Project managers can unfold their project plan according to the process model, realizing activities and work products on-demand.  Practitioners receive direct task guidance within their immediate context and work flow transitions and state changes are automated.

Level 3 - Define and Deploy Organization-wide Standard Processes

CMMI Level 3 organizations use IRIS Process Author to define standard processes that can be extended and specialized to create processes that are appropriate for specific project categories and can be reused repeatedly across multiple projects.  Modifications to standard processes can be intelligently propagated to all derived processes.

IRIS Process Live ensures a consistent and repeatable application of standard processes across all projects in the organization. Much of the manual effort required to enforce the standard processes are eliminated through automation.

Level 4 - Measure Performance and Quality of Your Standard Processes

CMMI Level 4 organizations use the process analysis features of IRIS Process Live to determine process compliance for a project and to understand process usage trends across multiple deployments.  IRIS Process Live tracks all variations from a prescribed process to allow for early corrective action and learnings for future deployments.

Level 5 - Optimize Your Development Processes for Maximum Results

CMMI level 5 organizations use the enactment data and feedback from IRIS Process Live to make incremental improvements to stabilized processes within IRIS Process Author.  These improved processes can then be deployed in IRIS Process Live and new enactment metrics and feedback can be captured in a cycle of continuous process improvement.
